What is Solar Energy, and How Does it Work?

In simple terms, it is energy harnessed from the sun, which is then used to generate electricity. As a renewable energy source, and with panels (cells) becoming increasingly cheaper in production and retail, this planet-friendly energy has proved itself as a beneficial and efficient solution for homes and businesses alike.
Solar panels can be placed on a roof or in a large open space, where they are fully exposed to the maximum amount of sunlight. They can be placed on any type of building deemed structurally suitable by our technicians and are not limited to residential and commercial building types.

The panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which allow particles of light (photons) to knock electrons free from atoms, thus creating electricity. When the sunlight is absorbed through the photovoltaic (PV) cells, this generates direct current (DC) energy. This energy goes into an inverter, which converts the DC electricity into AC (Alternating Current). The AC flows into your home's electrical panel where it is distributed for you to use, for lights, home appliances, and such.

​Most PV modules appear blue-black, as a result of their design to absorb the most sunlight. There have, however, been recent developments in technology that now allow for white solar panels. White solar panels work in the same way as the traditional solar panels; however a white cell is expected to work at temperatures 20–30° lower than standard PV modules. This new technology also extends to flexible solar modules, as and they are available in other varieties of colours.

The Pros and Cons of Solar Energy

Pros
Money-saving:​
  • The return on investment of PV systems varies, but generally speaking, for a medium-sized net metering set-up it is from around 1.5 years to 5 years. This depends on how subsidised the initial financial outlay is. The reduction of electricity bills, or indeed the absence of them entirely, has proven to be financially advantageous in the mid to long term.
 
  • Renewable energy source:
    Sunlight is the most abundant natural energy resource on planet Earth, making photovoltaics a highly sustainable method of electricity production with low environmental impact. To put it in perspective, if we could harness the sun's energy that hit the Earth during just 1 hour, this would meet all of humanity's power needs for 1 entire year.

  • Adaptable to requirements:
    ​PV systems can be designed for individual needs and have a range of applications, such as providing heat and solar water heating, as well as general electricity and water pumping.  Domestic, commercial, agricultural and industrial properties can take advantage of solar. 
Cons
  • Initial installation cost:
    ​Whilst the price of solar power systems in Limassol has drastically reduced over the years, the initial cost can still be considered as a substantial amount of money for some.

  • Weather dependency:
    A PV cell functions by converting sunlight into energy, so if there is no sunlight, for example at night time or if it is cloudy, this can hinder or even prevent the solar cell from generating any power. Storing energy from previous sunny days to use during these unproductive periods can be expensive.

  • Physically intrusive:
    Whilst many installations conveniently cover the roof of buildings, photovoltaic farms or large-scale projects can be spatially significant, covering large areas of land. It should be noted, however, that the area required by PV is less than that of traditional fossil fuel cycles and does not involve any disturbance of the ground, fuel transport, or water contamination.
​Inevitably there are some downsides to capturing energy from the sun. However, despite these drawbacks, implementation of photovoltaic systems has surged at about 20 percent a year over the past 15 years, thanks to rapidly falling prices and gains in efficiency. With tax incentives and efficient coordination with energy companies, governments have been keen to promote solar energy. The general opinion of consumers, environmentalists, scientists, and economists has supported this, and insists that we must move away from fossil fuels to a more sustainable and clean energy source.

How long do PV systems last?

​The average lifespan of photovoltaic cells is 25 years if they are maintained to an acceptable degree, whereas the inverter will need replacement after 10 to 15 years.
A battery bank will tend to need replacement after 5 to 15 years but this depends on how much it has been used and how it was taken care of during its lifespan.

What kind of maintenance does my PV equipment need?

Solar panels generally require very little maintenance in order to function. However, it is required periodically and can usually be undertaken by general cleaning companies if it is not possible to do yourself. That being said, the level and type of maintenance required depends on the particular installation, and you should be fully advised of what this entails by the time of installation. Generally speaking, a light cleaning to ensure dirt and debris is not obstructing the sun rays is sufficient, though for larger installations a more professional and regular inspection is encouraged, to ensure your equipment keeps operating safely, correctly, and efficiently.

How much does a photovoltaic system cost?

Market prices of PV modules have decreased by about 90% and system prices 80% during the past decade, making it the preferred energy choice in financial, economical, and humanitarian terms.

​In Cyprus, the payback  period, or PBP (time needed for the equipment to pay for itself) for photovoltaic systems is between 1.5 to 3.5 years. Clearly, the benefits to the end consumer far outweigh the inconvenience of the initial cost.

Depending on the kWp, a mid-sized system would currently cost around €4300 - €5300, although there are subsidies from the Cyprus government to encourage consumer uptake.
